Hi Mike I think Bill has it spot on, seen that type of stuff many times over the years usually under the bonnet of old cars (Mini) for a make do repair. However more recently in my Dads garage which we cleared and chucked to the skips!!! Bu--er You hog stuff for years just incase you need it and the minute you chuck it you need it ,sods law they call it.

Looks to me like an old mini bypass hose not the modern concertina type but the original one had a look about but all the new ones seem to be plain and not ribbed

That looks really annoyingly familiar! Even more annoying is that I'm 99.9% sure I've seen some somewhere fairly recently but can't think exactly when or where!

Its hauntingly familiar to me - I think I have seen it used in the engine pipework of older Narrowboats. I will send the pic to two people who may know, Phil the Train and Jon Oddy, boat fixer extraordinary.

"If it's part of a boat fuel system then it needs to be BS-EN-ISO 7840 rated, big fireballs and stuff else. SAE J 1527, DIN 4798 or marked with the type of fuel in use are also acceptable."

I tweeted back that I would pass that on, but since K7 didn't blow up before she sank and future running time will be limited, under strict supervision and considering the other risks, you would probably go with the original hose type.

BTW - these people might be a reasonable starting point for researching 1950's Garden Hoses...

Just a thought, but is the pipe in question not a similar size to that used on motorcycles?

I've worked on every type of bike from the Brough Superior to modern superbikes and I've never seen anything like it on any. The thing that keeps coming back to my mind is black rubber garden hose - I'd swear it's exactly the same as the one my dad had on his allotment when I was a kid. I've emailed the pic to a friend whom I'm sure still has some of it.

When I saw this I immediately thought back to my fire fighting equipment days, It is very similar to old fire reel hose. Anyway here is a link to a similar modern product, the dimensions are slightly wrong but yours may also not be quite the same as thought given it's been clamped up etc for many years, worth a try ?
